The Awesome Ali Cross Talks about Renaissance Faires

More Than Just FUN ~ It's RESEARCH!

I've loved Nicole from the moment I saw her profile pic ~ dressed in Renaissance garb. I thought, She's a soul mate! For my birthday a couple years ago, my husband surprised me with a custom-made costume that I could wear to our local faires ~ and I do!

My family and I literally plan our holidays around the local faires and festivals. We go to three different Scottish festivals (which are basically Renaissance Faires with kilts and pipes!) Then we go to a couple Medieval/Reconnaissance fairest, too. We love them! The highlights are the jousting, the "fight the giant" (Nerf-sword fighting knight-style) and of course, the pipes and drums.

You would think I wrote high fantasy with all that Lord and Lady stuff. You'd swear in a court of law it was true if you read my list of all-time-favorite books (hint: all high fantasy!). But . . . I don't write in that genre. And I have no idea why.

But while I don't write the genre, it does influence everything story I tell.

I write tales steeped in family history, in culture, in belonging. I write traditional ideals ~ men and women can still be knights and ladies if they're on a space ship!

The wonderful thing about faires and festivals, or ComicCon (which I also love! Ha!) or Robot Wars or whatever other-worldly activities you enjoy, is that it all feeds your creative self. Ride a horse and pretend you're flying a Pegasus. Heck, ride your bike and imagine it's a dragon! Dance like it's May-Day. Anything. Everything!

Immerse yourself in fantasy ~ in whatever form it takes for you ~ and let it feed your creative self. The joy and freedom you feel will allow your fantasy to take flight and inspire greatness in your stories.

Thanks for letting me hang out in your fair village today, Nicole, AND for being a friendly, genteel face in the blogosphere!

Nicole here: No, thank YOU, Ali! And we're definitely soul mates. ;)

About BLOOD CROWN: Androids have claimed power over what remains of the human race. They rule without remorse. They are the Mind and humans exist only to serve them.

But it wasn't always so.

Before the android uprising, select droids, called Servants, were pivotal in engineering a new human race with nanotechnology enhanced DNA. The Blood Crown theorum was to be humanity's crowning glory and the key to their survival in deep space.

But Serantha, Daughter of the West, was the last female to receive Gifts from her Servant and when the Mind mutinied, she was hidden away, and presumed dead.

Without Serantha there is no hope of the Blood Crown being realized so Nicolai, Son of the East, abandons his crown to join the rebel forces. He might not provide the future for his people he had once dreamed of, but he will not go down without a fight.

When Nicolai discovers Sera among a small compliment of kitchen staff, everything changes--but Sera's Gifts were never completed and she is ill-equipped to face a legion of androids determined to wipe her, and every other human, out of existence.

Their only hope is the Blood Crown--but even if Serantha and Nicolai can realize their potential it may be too late to save mankind.

This is WAR blog tour - Casting Sloane

Welcome, dear readers, Lisa and Laura Roecker who have cast Sloane from their awesome novel This is WAR.

Jamie Chung from The Real World San Diego. But a younger version. Sorry Jamie. Sloane is exquisite and delicate and ultra-feminine. She has so much fight on the inside, but rarely lets anyone close enough to see it. She doesn’t give herself nearly as much credit as she deserves.

This is WAR

This is W.A.R. begins with a victim who can no longer speak for herself, and whose murder blossoms into a call-to-arms. Enter four very different girls, four very different motives to avenge Willa Ames-Rowan, and only one rule to start: Destroy James Gregory and his family at any cost. Willa's initials spell the secret rallying cry that spurs the foursome to pool their considerable resources and deliver their particular brand of vigilante justice. Innocence is lost, battles are won—and the pursuit of the truth ultimately threatens to destroy them all.

Interview with Dina Rae, Author of The Last Degree

Everyone, allow me to introduce Dina Rae.

Dina Rae is a new author here to stay.  As a former teacher, she brings an academic element to her work.  Her two novels, Halo of the Damned and The Last Degree, weave research and suspense throughout the plots.  Her short story, Be Paranoid Be Prepared, is a prequel of sorts to The Last Degree, focusing on the James Martin character.  Dina also freelances for various entertainment blogs.

Dina lives with her husband, two daughters, and two dogs outside of Chicago.  She is a Christian, an avid tennis player, movie buff, and self-proclaimed expert on several conspiracy theories.  When she is not writing, she is reading novels from her favorite authors Dan Brown, Anne Rice, Stephen King, Brad Thor, George R.R. Martin, and Preston & Childs.

And now, onto the interview! What inspired you to write The Last Degree?

I was a teacher and then got laid off.  I used my extra time to pursue my dreams of writing a novel.

That's great. Whenever you can turn a negative into a positive, that's always a good thing. Do you have a specific writing style?

So far, I like to write in 3rd person, lmtd. POV with verbs in the past tense.  I also like to have 3-5 subplots that eventually merge towards the end.

How did you come up with the title?

The Last Degree in the Scottish Freemasonry is the 33rd degree.  My novel is about this inner circle along with other secret societies who plan for New World Order.

Oh, that's interesting! Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

The book is fiction but based on mainstream conspiracy theories that have been discussed for decades.  I hope readers will be entertained, learn something new, and somewhat reflect on a possible upcoming Apocalypse.

Nice. Since most authors are also readers, what books have most influenced your life most?

So many books, hard to choose, but Stephen King’s The Stand and Jerry Jenkins’/Tim LaHaye’s Left Behind Series always comes to mind.

Oh, good ones. What book are you reading now?

I am reading four books right now-Angelology in my car on CD, The White Queen on my ipod, Soul Sisters on my computer, and The 12th Imam on my Nook, all are very enjoyable.

Are there any new authors who have grasped your interest?

I read 50 Shades of Gray and was disappointed.  James is a wonderful story teller, but I’m just not interested in that kind of story.  Thought the ending was perfect-she dumped the weirdo and moved on, but I guess there are two more books.  I loved Justin Cronin’s The Passage, but was too long.

I haven't read either of those. What are your current projects?

I am writing a sequel to my other novel, Halo of the Damned.  It’s about a fallen angel who forms his own religion and tries to sever all ties with Hell.

I love sequels. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Everything is challenging-the manuscript, getting published, promoting the book-it doesn’t end.  I find the biz fascinating and am learning something new each day.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

Very tough question-so many, but Dan Brown is one of my favorites.  I love how he weaves research into the story and how he gets me to go onto Google and check some of his plot lines.

I actually haven't read anything by him yet either. I have so many books to read! How long does it take you to write a book?

Three to six months.

Wow! What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I like to write each chapter longhand, then again longhand in a different journal, and then type it into the computer.  Four handwritten pages will magically turn into 8 typed by the third draft.

Now that's impressive! Time for some fun questions. What paranormal creature would you be and why?

I would love to be witch and fly on a broom.

LOL! What makes you laugh?

Myself, my family, and almost anyone who is really trying to be funny.

Aw. My family makes me laugh all the time too, sometimes even when they aren't trying to be funny! If aliens landed in front of you and, in exchange for anything you desire, offered you any position on their planet, what would you want.

Wow!  Sounds like an episode of Ancient Aliens-one of my favorite shows!  I would want to be a judge so that justice would be fair and not in the alien race’s favor.

Oh, good one! If you could be any character in fiction, who would you be?

Danarys of Game of Thrones-She’s gorgeous, fierce, immune to fire, and a leader.

Nice. If you had six months with no obligations or financial constraints, what would you do with the time?

Travel the world.

You'd let me go with you, right? :) If you could have dinner with anyone from history, who would it be, and why?

Jesus Christ and I hope that someday He invites me to eat with Him.

Great choice! If you won $20 million in the lottery, what would you do with the money?

Easy Breezy.  I would build myself a dream-bunker in the Rocky Mountains.

Thanks so much for dropping by!

Thanks so much for having me as your guest!

The Last Degree is a fictionalized account of how Freemasons and other secret societies set up the world for takeover. Ancient writings foretell a ‘Shining One’ who emerges as the world’s prophet. A murder of a Most Worshipful mason resembles a secret oath. A cop gets too close to solving the crime. Paranoid preppers go underground, preparing for war.

Headlines such as the Norway massacre, meltdown of the European Union, unscrupulous media, animal die-offs, Middle Eastern unrest, and U.S. shrinking power make the plot relevant to present day. This book is an ode to Christians, Birthers, 2012ers, Truthers, preppers, and/or other conspiracy junkies who enjoy Dan Brown, Jesse Ventura, Brad Meltzer, Alex Jones, Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye.

Excerpt:

Dwight took off his crown, signifying he was no longer playing King Solomon.

“Sacrifice is expected for ones that you love.  Do you love me?” Dwight shouted.  “Then bow down before me and offer praise!”

Everyone knelt and laid their head down to the floor, chanting 'Most Worshipful,

Most Worshipful' several times before Dwight commanded them to get up.

In a manic energetic state, Dwight vociferated, “Et vitam impendere vero!”  All repeated, with the three new pledges joining in.  Minutes later, he began to calm down.  “To sacrifice life for truth - that is what we must always do!  You must trust me as your Most Worshipful and sacrifice at my command!  Are you prepared to do this?”  All three pledges nodded.

Dwight pulled the content baby out of Arthur's arms and threw it high into the air.  As the baby began to descend, Dwight took his sword and hacked through its neck, decapitating it before it hit the floor.  Only the three pledges shrieked in horror.  He sinisterly smiled as he picked up the head and body, revealing it was only a doll.

“Don't believe with your eyes, but believe with your knowledge.  We are his chosen and will soon be exalted.”

The three men looked down at their hands and tried not to scream.  They were covered in blood.

“Sacrifice, my brothers, sacrifice.  I will teach you well.  You are all Chiefs of the Tabernacle!  Let us go and celebrate!” Dwight gleamed.

Guest Blog with Deb Hanrahan - Starting Out as a Writer - 5 Things You Should Know and Review and Giveaway of Changing My Wardrobe

Starting Out As A Writer – 5 Things You Should Know

When I completed Changing My Wardrobe, I was naïve enough to think, “Yay, I’m done!” Little did I know that it was just the beginning. Over the next year, I learned a lot but also wasted a considerable amount of time and money. So I would like to pass along the five things that I think every new writer should know.

1.                  Someone else needs to edit your manuscript, but you can proofread it yourself. It is essential to have another pair of eyes look at your story and try to find any plot holes, character problems, timeline issues, point-of-view slips, and tense inconsistencies. This doesn’t need to be done by a professional but should be done by someone who reads a lot and is brutally honest. Although, a professional could help you fix the problems and not just point them out to you.

In my humble opinion, proofreading or line editing can be done by the author, but spell check alone won’t cut it. I like to look through my manuscript one item at a time. For instance, I will look at every comma, then every apostrophe etc. After punctuation, I look for common word mistakes like here vs. hear, and there vs. their. I use The Elements of Style by Strunk and White as a reference (according to On Writing, so does Stephen King.)

2.                  Writing is going to cost you something—money, time, your ego, your soul…. Even though the cost to actually write a book is minimal, the cost to publish it can be high. Trust me, whether you plan to query agents or self-publish, you will pay. If you don’t have a lot of money, plan to spend your time, and if you don’t have a lot of time, plan to spend your money.

3.                  Make peace with social media. If you want readers to find out about your book, you will need to become a social media expert. You must have a blog/website, a Facebook page, and a Goodreads account. These three things are essential. You might also want to consider using Twitter, You Tube, Tumbler, Pinterest…you get the idea.

4.                  Choose your brand name carefully. When you are setting up your various social media accounts, you should use your author name. It takes a long time to amass a following, and if you need to change your name down the road, you might lose followers. I made this mistake with my blog. At first, I used a pen name for my blog address, and when I recently changed it to my author name, I lost my Google ranking.

5.                  If you want to write for a living, you will need to work at it every day (or nearly every day.) Almost all popular authors have more than just one or two books out there. So, like anything else in life, writing takes work, dedication, and patience—lots and lots of patience.

Changing My Wardrobe
By Deb Hanrahan
Release Date: May 26, 2011

Description:
Lindsey, a high school freshman, views her new school as a place to start over. With the help of her friends, she hopes that a change in her wardrobe will prompt a change in her image. She has some success until her long-time nemesis, Avery, reminds Lindsey of her place. Without asking for help from the adults, the main character and her friends struggle to manage the bullying. Despite their efforts, tensions rise, and people get hurt. The ending of this book will leave the reader shocked and heartbroken.

Changing My Wardrobe is a cautionary tale about the immutable problem of bullying. This story not only looks at bullying from the victim's point of view but also explores the motives behind the aggressors’ actions. Changing My Wardrobe demonstrates the fluid and complex nature of bullying by shining a light on the contributing factor of social media.

 About the Author
I live with my husband and three teenagers in the Chicagoland burbs. After graduating from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Chemistry, I worked at a nuclear power plant for five years. I then left my career to stay at home with my three kids.

Seemingly, overnight, I went from being crazy-busy to having way too much time on my hands. With my husband working long hours and my kids pursuing their own lives, I had to reinvent myself. So, I decided to write that book I always wanted to write. Changing My Wardrobe is my first novel

Nicole's Review: Changing my Wardrobe tackles a harsh subject. Bullying is a major problem for a lot of teens and it was great to read a book on this topic.

I do have to say that I liked Lindsey's friends more than Lindsey for most of the book. I wanted to like Lindsey but she treated Jocelyn poorly. Her thoughts and actions did not show Lindsey in a good light. At times, the dialogue between the characters felt flat. Teeny stole the spotlight from Lindsey on many occasions. I almost think the story would have been stronger if it had been told from Teeny's POV instead of Lindsey's.

The ending completely shocked me and almost redeemed Lindsey in my eyes. Very powerful ending. Seriously gripping. I love theme of this story and wish more YA books would tackle this subject.

Live and Let Fly Blog Tour

An act of Magic.  The Threat of Armagheddon.  The universes have one chance for survival, and one dragon to do the job.

Live and Let Fly Blurb:

For a dragon detective with a magic-slinging nun as a partner, saving the worlds gets routine. So, when the US government hires Vern and Sister Grace to recover stolen secrets for creating a new Interdimensional Gap--secrets the US would like to keep to itself, thank you—Vern sees a chance to play Dragon-Oh-Seven.
No human spy, however, ever went up against a Norse goddess determined to exploit those secrets to rescue her husband. Sigyn will move heaven and earth to get Loki—and use the best and worst of our world against anyone who tries to stop her.
It's super-spy spoofing at its best with exotic locations (Idaho--exotic?), maniacal middle-managers, secret agent men, teen rock stars in trouble, man-eating animatronics, evil overlords and more!

Excerpt:

Festival was Friday. We had two days to stop a Nordic demigod evil overlord—overlady, overbeing, whatever—from blowing up a nuclear power plant, possibly destroying half an island full of revelers in the process, and creating an Interdimensional Gap through which she can bring the rest of her giant relatives to set up housekeeping where the Faerie Catholic Church didn't have the power to control them. In other words, two days until Hel broke loose.
I've had worse deadlines. I could afford a long bath in our whirlpool tub and a good meal first.
