Question of the Week - Time to Change

Copyright (c) 123RF Stock Photos

If you could go back in time and somehow tell your younger self something, what would it be?

Me? I would tell myself to studying just a little bit more for any one class in college. I graduated a half letter grade short of honors. I only needed one B- to have been a B. My worst semester had been when I started dating the man I would later marry. Oh, and my degree was a BS in chemistry with a concentration in forensic science and a minor in biology.

Btw, I'm almost at 1,000 followers. Already thinking about what prizes to offer for a 1,000 follower contest. Anything in particular you would want to win? I was thinking maybe a gift card, maybe some books, maybe a big critique...

  1. Nineteen to go!
Ironically, I'd go back and tell myself that yes, I would find someone someone awesome. (I didn't date a lot in high school.)

  2. WOOT! You're so close! Keep rakin' them in!!

I would tell my already young but younger self not to push Rihanna (the superstar singer) in the river and cause her to bruise her elbow, then maybe now I'll still be her friend and get to ride in her private jet.

    Don't ask, it's a long story. I'm still depressed. --_--

(But she's such a crybaby, I didn't even push her that hard.)

  3. It would have to be lottery numbers. Not a full win, but enough to set up for better times ahead. Might also do the grade thing, too. Maybe.

  4. You're almost there! :) I would go back and tell myself to work while going to university and not take out student loans. I'm STILL paying those off.

  5. I think I'd tell myself that bad boys are not all they're cracked up to be. It is what I tell the teenage girls I work with. :)

  6. Whoot!! AWESOME! I'd tell myself to be more confident and give the stuck-ups a real piece of my mind. lol

  7. I'd tell myself to follow my dreams and not the expectations of others.

  8. I've just added to your numbers by one. I'd tell my younger self you'll be laughing at all the angst when you get older, so don't worry about it, have fun!

  9. I would have kept up playing the piano. I love music but gave it up when I left school. I have no regrets about my marriage.....a wonderful man who sadly passed away 13 years ago. I would however have stayed living in Spain instead of coming back to the UK four years ago.

  10. I'm sure you'll read 1000 followers in no time!

I would go back and tell my younger self that if I really want something I have to work for it. Natural talent can only take you so far.

  11. I would tell myself to start writing earlier and wait until I was advancing on old age. lol

  12. I would tell myself to ignore those who said writing was a waste of time. I would have followed the writing path and not the nursing one.

    Happy New Year.

  13. WOW! Almost 1000 followers? IMPRESSIVE to the nth!

I would go back and tell my younger self to get more serious about my writing. I was an editor for the school paper, but of course, at that age, had designs on more important matters.

    Ahhhhh..the mysteries of life.

  14. i think all those prizes sound awesome.
For me, i'd tell myself to not let my writing drop away for two years. I can't even imagine where i'd be now if i hadn't put my writing aside for those two years

  15. Provocative question, I love it! I would definitely tell my younger self not to worry about what other people think. I'm just now coming into my own after being buried under decades of people pleasing.

  16. I would tell my younger self to really get to know me before getting serious about anyone else. I'd foster my strengths first. Congrats on so many followers. I found you from Alex.

  17. Congratulations! So close!!

I'd tell myself to relax and not worry so much because everything was going to work out fine. In fact, that's still good advice.

  18. 1,000 followers...so close. It will be here before you know it.

What would I tell my younger self? To stick with my belief that people can see different things when they read books even if the AP teacher was a bit of a stick and only thought one way was the best.

  19. I considered this carefully, but with every 'oh I'd tell my 12 year old me...' I thought of the path that led me to today. For example, if I hadn't failed exams, I wouldn't have retaken and met my husband. If I hadn't spent some time unemployed, I'd never have submitted as intensely and had stories published.

So my answer is: I'd tell myself nothing.

  20. Hi Nichole, nice to meet you. I'm now following your blog at Alex's suggestion. I like what I see on your page. Hope you drop by my blog to see my latest posts (Paris posts).

    Good luck on hitting 1000!

  21. Oops, I didn't answer the question - I would have told my younger self to head north sooner.

That's where I discovered the beautiful city I call home. I've never left it. It was a good fit.

  22. I would tell my younger self that I was okay just the way I was. I spent a lot of time trying to fit someone else's mold for what I should be. What a waste of time.

And gift cards always make great gifts. :)

  23. I love the look of your blog, Nicole! It's so unique. :)

Anyway, I would tell my younger self to stop worrying about being perfect--especially in school.

  24. I would tell my younger self to listen to my mother and obey her, instead of thinking I'm so smart and she's not. The older I got the more I realized how wise she was and I wish I had listened more to her counsel!

  25. 1000 that is amazing!!! Holy cow. Congratulations only 14 away.

I think if I could tell myself anything it would be...You have forever to be an adult so enjoy being a kid :)

  26. I would tell myself to look out instead of in and to look up instead of down. My younger self would know what that means ;)

You'll hit the grand before you know it, and I really like your ideas for prizes. Maybe a choice between two since some followers aren't writers.

  27. I feel your pain! Like 2 stinking hundredths of a point away. Grrrr. My advice to my younger self (which I tell my daughter all the time) would be to pay attention to how a man treats his mother before making any long-term commitments.

You're sooo close. If I wasn't already a follower, I'd totally sign up now.

  28. ooo, quadruple digits - how fun.

If I went back I'd tell myself close to the same thing. I look back now and I shake my head.

  29. What about the butterfly effect? If you changed one small thing maybe everything would change ... (Cue eerie music)

  30. I'd tell my younger self not to jump in that septic tank (true story)! Now my husband never takes me seriously because he says I'm full of crap, lol.

  31. I'd tell my younger self not to waste any of it. It all goes by so much faster than you believe.

(I just reduced your number to 13.)

  32. My follow puts you just that much closer to 1000. I wish I studied harder in school... wait, I wish I'd studied at all. Life would have turned out a great deal differently if I had.

  33. Congratulations and hope you will achieve 1000 soon. I think I may tell myself to laugh more in life. I'm too serious in general.

  34. Hi Nicole .. that's amazing nearly 1,000 followers - fantastic news.

Good point .. I was thinking about this the other day .. I'd like to find someone who could guide me the future ahead - not just be left to get on with it .. and then rather too many years later to find out - perhaps I could have done better. A mentor to be with me along the way - not intrusive .. but just guiding and suggesting things ..

Good luck with 2012 and have fun - cheers Hilary
