If You Were a Monster Hunter, What Monsters Would You Hunt?

Copyright (c) 123RF Stock Photos

If you were a monster hunter, what monsters would you want to hunt?

I started a new novel - a steampunk paranormal - two days ago and the MMC is a monster hunter. I'm still trying to figure out which creatures he's going to hunt. I've already decided against vampires (although they will be mentioned as not existing in this world) and zombies. There will be Amarok or Amagup and a horde of Frankenstein monsters (except they won't exactly be from Frankensten). But I would like to add another creature or two to the mix.

Writing Update

Hi, all!

I've been busy editing and writing and more editing and more writing. Seriously  it's a wonder my fingers haven't fallen off! And son #1 spilled oil on my keyboard recently so some of the keys still or have to be pressed really hard. I just bought this keyboard so I'm hoping the keys will eventually work right again and deal.

Oh, and speaking of son #1, we registered him for kindergarten yesterday at the school's open house. Yeah, I'm a complete mess over that. I have a feeling that the first day he might be a little apprehensive, but the second, he won't even look back and that will be both a blessing and yet another reason to cry. :/

Anyhow, I'm part of a group of writers writing a novel with Cupid. That novel is a MG fantasy about a sister and brother who are trapped in a land ruled by the four seasons and they have to save Christmas when spring comes too early. It's the first in a five-book series. Right now, its called Winter Magic, but that might change. I definitely want to include either winter or snow or something like that in the title.

I'm also almost finished with my superhero romance! I really enjoyed writing this one. It's going to be published through Desert Breeze Publishing later on this year and will be the first in another trilogy. Still not sure of the titles of the three books but once they're finalized, I'll let you know.

I promise to start blogging more often again!

So tell me, what have you been working on?

Cover Reveal - SUSY Asylum by Michael Pierce

Coming Soon- the anticipated sequel to Michael Pierce's PROVEX City.

Are you ready for a cover reveal?

Why am I even asking?

BLURB:
SUSY Asylum
The Lorne Family Vault, Book 2

by Michael Pierce

In SUSY Asylum, there is no release. There is no escape. No hope. In SUSY Asylum, the patients come face-to-face with their mirrors, locked away with the other halves of themselves who are thirsty for more than blood. Or so says Commodore Chaos.

Oliver and Desiree are introduced to the writings of the mysterious blogger, Commodore Chaos, when they return to Provex City to indulge in what the sublime city has to offer. The blogger claims the Lornes are collecting people venturing between the higher planes of awareness and locking them away in their mythical asylum. But are these legitimate concerns for inter-plane travelers or just the ramblings of an anonymous conspiracy blogger?

Oliver looks to the city as his only connection to his father while Desiree looks to the city as an escape from the torment of losing her best friend—again. Provex City is a wonder of beautiful treasures, entrancing them to continue returning. But behind the beauty, wolves have continued hunting Oliver, a boy who is still mostly unaware of his importance in the rebellion.

Oliver’s belief is waning. Desiree will not always be by his side. Mr. Gordon will not always come to his aid. Oliver finds himself alone, forced to confront his biggest fears, fight his inner demons, and face the very cold reality that no one is coming to save him.

Welcome to SUSY Asylum.

I've Read That Before Guest Blog by Anne Elisabeth Stengl Author of Starflower

One thing every writer fears is falling into the pit of clichés. Fantasy writers especially, in  a literary world inundated with quests and elves and magic, face this fate with certain dread and spend an awful lot of time grappling for that elusive "originality" that will set their world and characters apart. It's a tremendous pressure, and one that can be quite staggering sometimes.

Our audience reads fantasy in search of a certain type of escapism. There are themes readers long to see again and again, character types and dramatic moments that thrilled them at first encounter and which they would love to experience anew. Granted, our audience doesn't want to read the same plot over and over, and it certainly doesn't want to be able to predict from page one how everything is going to turn out. But lovers of fantasy and fairy tale are looking for a certain sense of familiarity that stretches back to childhood loves, to themes and stories they learned before they can even remember.

So how do we strike a balance? How do we give our audience what they long for while simultaneously avoiding the pitfalls of clichés and of losing all sense of individuality?

The answer lies in understanding the difference between "clichés" and "archetypes."

Let me start with a definition of "cliché." A cliché is a storyline or character that has become trite or hackneyed. It is a theme, characterization, or situation that has been used so many times that it is now commonplace and predictable.

An "archetype," by contrast, is an image, character, or pattern that recurs throughout literature so often that it becomes universally recognized by readers across the globe.

Can you see the difference here? One has to do with the how the story plays out . . . one has to do with what the story is about.

If that difference remains foggy, let me use an example:

A small person and/or child goes on a dangerous quest to destroy a powerful and magical talisman.

The above storyline has become a cliché. We loved it the first time Tolkien did it in The Lord of the Rings. But now when it crops up again, we groan and say to ourselves, "I've read that before!"

But wait a minute. There is more to this story! Because, you see, an archetype would be:

A small person and/or child goes on a dangerous quest.

Now this is a storyline of which we never tire! We'll read it again and again, be it in a fairy tale like Little Red Riding Hood or Puss in Boots, or in a longer fantasy such as Harry Potter or The Lightning Thief. Humanity as a whole responds to the idea of the underdog, the small person, the child, facing extraordinary odds and somehow, against all expectations, overcoming and proving victorious.

The archetype of the small hero against the great enemy speaks to us at a universal level, evoking a response that is deep and almost unconscious. We want to read that story again. We don't want to see the same plot (i.e. small person destroying the magical talisman) again, but we do want to see the theme (the small person overcoming outrageous odds).

Archetypes can be something as simple as a symbol. Consider your reaction to the symbol of the snake vs. the eagle. Your immediate reaction is "snake = bad," "eagle = good." That's a universal response, a pattern of thought ingrained in what Carl Gustav Jung would call the "collective unconscious." We all respond to the perceived insidiousness of snakes and nobility of eagles in the same way.

This idea of the "collective unconscious" holds true with different types of characters. Archetypal characters include the third son, the princess in disguise, the chosen one, the girl disguised as a boy, the wise grandparent, the prostitute with a heart of gold, the wicked uncle, the wicked stepmother, the warrior princess, the clever thief.

Archetypal storylines might be something like "the princess, prince, and dragon" theme, which we have seen again and again in literature. Or even "the enchanted sleep," "the princess locked in a tower," "true love's first kiss," and many more.

All of these archetypes evoke certain feelings and reactions in lovers of fairy tales and fantasy. Granted, we don't want to see these themes and characters used in exactly the same way they've been done before. We want something fresh and different. But we do long for the archetypes. We respond to them, and they are what keep us coming back to this genre.

The sooner we writers of fantasy recognize the difference between clichés and archetypes, the sooner we have the freedom to take our stories in the fantastic directions we long to explore!

Excerpt

The Kiss by the River:

The girl did not stir when Eanrin lifted her into his arms; her sleep was profound indeed. Her head lolled over his arm, and he was obliged to part her thick hair to uncover her face. It was an uncommonly beautiful face for a mortal.
However, this girl’s beauty was different from any he had ever before seen. For one thing, her skin was rich dark brown, and her hair glossy black. For another, she was imperfect. Her teeth, visible between gently parted lips, were a little crooked. Mud stained her skin, making it darker still, and her brow, even in sleep, was puckered with anxiety or fear. Her dreams must be wicked indeed.
Eanrin grimaced at the sight and almost put her down again. After all, a princess with dreams like those probably had a tale of woe to match. She would certainly wake with expectations of a handsome hero to aid her. As far as Eanrin was concerned, a dash of heroism was one thing, but commitment to a cause? Never. Rushing off to the rescue of Lady Gleamdren was different, for he had determined that she must be his wife and the sole inspiration to his life’s work. Besides, he loved her.
This creature meant nothing to him.
But blood oozed from the abrasions on her wrists. And her body, mortal and vulnerable, lay in his arms. Eanrin rolled his eyes heavenward as though to seek some holy aid. Then he braced himself and wiped the mud off her lips with the edge of his cloak. She frowned in her sleep and stirred, but did not wake.
“Nothing for it,” he muttered. Closing his eyes and trying not to smell her any more than he must, he leaned in and kissed her . . .

Cover Reveal - The Dragon Empire by Heather McCorkle

Cover designed by CP Design.

The Dragon Empire by Heather McCorkle -- February 2013 / Compass Press

On Yacrana, dragons stand at the top of the evolutionary ladder instead of humans. Such an advanced species is not without its issues though.

There's trouble in the Dragon Empire, the kind that could start a war between dragons and the races of people. Hidden factions of dragons believe they should rule the lesser races, not simply stand aside and allow them to develop as they will. Having lived so long in peace, the Emperors turn a blind eye, many oblivious that such attitudes even exist.
Despite being only an architect class, emerald dragon, Grendar is willing to risk banishment and death to stop that which his rulers refuse to see. The hope of peace lies not within the scaled breast of a dragon however, but within the hands of a group of people. But if the hidden factions have their way, these people won’t live to fulfill such a destiny. With a reluctant seer at his side, Grendar must leave his precious Empire for the outside world to save those that will one day save his kind.

Creating the World of “A Cast of Stones” Guest Post by Author Patrick W. Carr

When I first started “A Cast of Stones” under a different title, I toyed with the idea of approaching it as an alternative European history kind of work. There had never been any other choice but Medieval, because of the themes I wanted to use, which for me meant the time period between 500 – 1500. Prior to 500 I would have to deal with the vestiges of the Roman Empire and after 1500, I would have to take in to account the effects of the Renaissance and the advancements in the technology of war. I wanted to use a period before cannon became the available on ship. At last I settled on 14th century Europe. But at the same time, I also wanted to build a mythos that was unique to my world, which meant I had to drop in my fantasy backstory here and there. One of my favorite chapters in the book which develops my world and ends with a really high creep factor is “Conger’s Tale.” So, for me, my world became a mix of our historical one and the fantasy one I had rattling around my brain.

After choosing the time frame, I started sweating the details so that my book would be believable as well as fun. This might seem strange for a fantasy, after all, many authors have written great fantasy without a discernible time frame or even mixing time frames. For example, if you were to read “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant” by Stephen R. Donaldson, you would be hard pressed to identify a matching period in history. There simply isn’t one. There’s one castle in the story, but it’s called a keep and it was carved, not built, out of solid rock by giants. On the other hand, if you read “The Belgariad” by David Eddings, he seems intent on mixing as many time periods as possible. There are equivalents to knights in armor, roman legions, Vikings, English longbows, and others. Yet he manages to blend them all into a ripping good story.

Unlike Eddings, I chose to have a set time frame, not just because it fit the military aspects I needed, but because it lent itself to the religious aspects required. I needed to depict a church that worked mechanistically, ergo, I needed to place my story sometime before the reformation. This wasn’t required by my story, but I felt it would make a good subplot. Errol’s world is not only struggling with a war for survival, but is simultaneously dealing with a church that lost its way and must change. That idea is central to the second book in the series and provides much of the backdrop for Martin’s character.

In the end, I chose the 13th – 14th century. It fit the bill and didn’t pose the plotting problems of later time frames. However, it’s important to keep from ascribing too much weight to this choice. After all, I was writing a fantasy. The purpose of the time period was to serve more as a receptacle for ideas of magic and setting and character. It would have been a mistake to allow the historical reality of 14th century Europe to dictate the book even though I tried to stay true to that period as much as possible.

I think the most important thing for a fantasy writer to remember is consistency within their story. Eddings and Donaldson show that almost anything will work, but the important this is to stay internally consistent. I’ve read stories where the author disobeys his own rules and the results are disappointing. The temptation is there for all of us, especially when we write ourselves into a corner, but fantasy readers are at once a forgiving and demanding bunch. We can handle wizards in Chicago and time travel to King Arthur’s Court, but we won’t tolerate the author making up the rules on the fly.

A Cast of Stones

An Epic Medieval Saga Fantasy Readers Will Love

In the backwater village of Callowford, Errol Stone's search for a drink is interrupted by a church messenger who arrives with urgent missives for the hermit priest in the hills. Desperate for coin, Errol volunteers to deliver them but soon finds himself hunted by deadly assassins. Forced to flee with the priest and a small band of travelers, Errol soon learns he's joined a quest that could change the fate of his kingdom.
Protected for millennia by the heirs of the first king, the kingdom's dynasty is near an end and a new king must be selected. As tension and danger mount, Errol must leave behind his drunkenness and grief, learn to fight, and come to know his God in order to survive a journey to discover his destiny.

I'm not sure how it all went wrong.

The concept was simple.

The Trials were made to test us. They were made to challenge our strengths; our bravery.

We were supposed to come out better.

Winning the Trials would make us Superior citizens.

It would bring us honor and demonstrate our loyalty to the Imperial Alliance. I knew exactly what I wanted.

Until I met him.

There was something about him. Something dark. If only I had known the danger it would put us in.

I thought I knew the risks.

But I never imagined the price we'd pay.
~~~
Beautiful cover, isn't it? A wonderful story too. It's dark, with plenty of adventure and some romance. You'll want to get yourselves a copy of this book! Don't know Jess? Visit her blog.
